Happy Wednesday,
Every once in a while, I put out a call to chat with folks about their goals and what they're struggling with when it comes to fitness, health, and injury. I love these conversations because I just get to ask questions, and hear about people’s real stories.
Do you see any trends in the conversations I've had this week?
A trail runner told me, I roll my ankle almost every year. All I can think about when I run downhill is imagining it happening. She’s been signing up for longer and longer races and has a sense that she could be really good at it. She just wants to trust her ankle a little more.
A hunter told me that he doesn’t know how to balance everything he wants to do this fall. He’s built a gym in his house so that he can get some lifting in, even during this busy upcoming season, but he’s not sure what to do.
One woman told me, “I am not built for running. I hurt my feet too many times.” She pivoted to learning to strength train (and is loving it) but she keeps thinking about how she might get back to running.
A new mom told me she used to love lifting and hiking but since she gave birth she’s worried about if she’s ready because of her core. It’s hard to find time to exercise, and it’s hard to know what to prioritize in her limited time. She misses feeling strong and capable.
Another runner had a head injury this year that derailed her season. It’s bringing up memories of being injured for a long period of time years ago. She said, "I'm a goal oriented person, and it’s been hard not to have goals keeping me on track.”
I’m sharing because I also heard a lot of these folks say things along the lines of “I don’t know if this makes sense” as they shared these thoughts. It can feel isolating to be in pain, or avoiding something you love because of pain, or the fear of pain.
You’re in great company if any of these sound familiar to you.
Did this bring anything up for you? Drop me a line if you can relate.
Katy
